Oprah Winfrey to give commencement address at Harvard

Oprah Winfrey is to give the commencement address at Harvard this year.

The Oprah's Next Chapter host has been invited to address new graduates on May 30, the university announced on Monday (March 4).

Harvard President Drew Faust said of Winfrey's selection: "Oprah's journey from her grandmother's Mississippi farm to becoming one of the world's most admired women is one of the great American success stories."

Winfrey will be following in the footsteps of previous Harvard commencement speakers such as JK Rowling, Fareed Zakaria, Andy Samberg and Bill Gates.

The 2013 ceremony will be Harvard's 362nd graduation gala.

Winfrey got her break in the media industry while studying at Tennessee State University, where she was given a full scholarship.
