Oprah Winfrey Network Looking at Culpeper
The NBC29 newsroom received the following press release from the Town of Culpeper:
Press Release:
Culpeper may add to its designation as one of Americas Top 10 Small Towns, if the Oprah Winfrey Network and BBC Productions Worldwide choose Culpeper for a new matchmaking reality show for singles, "Lovetown, USA."
Culpeper is one of 40 towns currently in the running as a site for the series, according to one of the show's producers, who contacted town officials. The town's population of about 15,000 and demographics meet the criteria set by the producers. The list of town's will be pared down to 15 based on citizen interest and response.
"Once again, Culpeper has appeared on the national stage," said Mayor Chip Coleman, who received the producers call. "To have the Oprah Winfrey Network consider our town for this show is an honor."
The BBC America network has broadcast live from Culpeper during several national elections.
The matchmaking reality show plans to "takeover one whole town for the biggest dating challenge in TV history," said the production company's news release.
For 30 days, the show's matchmakers will guide the "quest for love" and the impact that process has on one community. The idea is to pair as many singles as possible, with participation by the mayor, local business and community leaders and citizens.
The producers are looking for community spirit as it narrows down the field of towns. The show is also looking for singles between the ages of 20 to 60.
Tourism Director Lori Sorrentino would like nothing better than to showcase Culpeper on a major cable network.
"The prospect of Culpeper being the centerpiece for this reality show, produced by someone of the stature and reputation of Oprah Winfrey, shows what a great place Culpeper is to visit," said Sorrentino. "The economic benefits of having a TV production crew in town for a month are phenomenal."
To show its enthusiasm, Sorrentino said single re! sidents need to fill out the detailed 18-page application. The downloadable application is available online at facebook.com/culpepervirginia.
Paper forms also are available at the Tourism Department, but after filling it out the applicant would have to scan and email the form to the producers at LovetownUSA@gmail.com.
"An overwhelming response and involvement by our citizens is critical to have Culpeper chosen," said Coleman. "I hope Culpeper embraces the idea and responds enthusiastically."
The love theme is not new to Virginia. Forty years ago, the catchy and successful slogan Virginia is For Lovers was created.
"Love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation," said Sorrentino. "I hope Culpeper citizens love this idea and embrace the prospect of hosting a nationally televised program.
"Culpeper could be Lovetown USA."
