Kerry Washington Makes Oprah Winfrey Cry During Next Chapter Interview
For a girl who stars in a show called "Scandal," Kerry Washington's life seems pretty scandal-free. But during a chat with Oprah Winfrey on "Oprah's Next Chapter" this week, the actress did dish on a few hot topics -- like her hot Hollywood leading men -- and later brought the Queen of Talk to tears.
Washington has co-starred with everyone from Chris Rock to Anthony Hopkins, and has even played Jamie Foxx's wife (twice!), but she doesn't kiss and tell. When Oprah asked her who among her leading men was the best kisser, the actress revealed, "I can't even answer that because there's nothing good about kissing on camera." The reason? Washington says kissing on-camera is awkward and "icky" and she doesn't enjoy it at all. Sorry, guys!
Washington also reminded us that she's a tad too young to remember the last time an African-American actress had the lead role in a network drama.
It's been nearly 40 years since Teresa Graves starred in "Get Christie Love," the short-lived ABC series from the mid-1970s, and Washington said she didn't know the statistics when she landed the starring role as Olivia Pope on "Scandal."
"I didn't know! , because I wasn't born in '74," she said. "I knew that I had never seen this before but I didn't know that it actually would be this momentous."
Kerry Washington's next chapter includes the big screen movie "Django Unchained" (she co-stars with Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio in the flick, due out Dec. 25), and when Oprah asked her about working on the emotional film about slavery in the Deep South, the actress said it was one of the hardest things she's ever done.
The movie was shot on a former slave plantation in Louisiana, and Washington said as her character, Broomhilda, was whipped she could feel the pain of the real life women who had suffered on the plantation before her.
She also compared her two characters, saying, "Olivia Pope is so the answer to Broomhilda's prayers. These characters are so intertwined, although they exist worlds apart they are the same woman hundreds of years apart. [Olivia Pope] is the answer to Broomhilda's prayers as to what might be possible one day."
A teary-eyed Oprah said, "That is so perfect I could weep. That is really good, really good."
After the interview aired, Oprah took to Twitter to write: "Why could I weep? Because every free woman is the answer to a slave woman's prayers."
And Washington tweeted: "On the way home one of my best friends asked: "Did @Oprah make you cry?" And I laughed and realized: "NO!!!!! She cried!!!!"
"Oprah's Next Chapter" airs on Sunday night at 9/8c on OWN.
