Russell is the director of Kony 2012, which released a half-hour long viral video on March 5 as an attempt to bring attention to Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda.

The video became one of the most successful viral videos in history, garnering almost 93 million viewers to date. Russell attracted support from celebrities including Angelina Jolie, Ben Affleck, Zooey Deschanel and Taylor Swift.

Russell was arrested in San Diego on suspicion of public masturbation, vandalising cars and being under the influence of alcohol ten days after the video launched.

His public breakdown was blamed on "exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition".
