Oprahs interview with Bobbi Kristina and Whitney Houstons family scores huge audience for OWN
Oprah Winfrey may have finally taken a step towards conquering the cable world. The talk show queens Sunday special that featured interviews with Whitney Houstons only daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and other members of the Houston family, drew the highest ratings ever for Winfreys OWN cable network.
According to The Associated Press, the special episode of Oprahs Next Chapter drew a whopping 3.5 million viewers, Nielsen numbers showed. The organization, which tracks viewers and ratings, also reported that the episode gave Oprahs Next Chapter triple-digit growth in nearly all the key ratings demographics.
Reuters reports that OWN released a statement, saying that the show drew more viewers than the episode of Oprahs Next Chapter that featured megachurch pastor Joel Osteen. That episode drew just 1.6 million viewers.
In the episode, 19-year-old Bobbi Kristina, who is the only daughter of Houston and Bobby Brown, talked about how she is doing since her mothers sudden death on Feb. 11. Winfrey also spoke to Houstons manager and sister-in-law, Patricia Houston. In her interview, Bobbi Kristina said that she feels that her mother is ...always with me.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, OWN has had its share of problems since launching last year. However, the network is finally showing growth and in February, the average prime time audience grew by 12 percent.
While full cable numbers will not be released until late Tuesday, the broadcast will probably put OWN among t! he top-r ated cable networks. OWNs main competition included a new episode of AMCs The Walking Dead and HBOs broadcasts of Game Change. Earlier it was reported that Game Changes four broadcasts drew a combined 3.6 million viewers.
