Bayport woman wins big

Glenda Sopha attended the Oprah Winfrey Show last year, but the surprises keep coming. Sopha, of Bayport, got more than she bargained for when she attended the show last Novemer. "I've been such a big fan of Oprah's and my granddaughter had been trying to get us tickets," Sopha said. "She got through and I really think we got the last two seats in the house." Rosie O'Donnell, Refreshingly, Refuses To Play It Safe on New OWN Show

Rosie O'Donnell may not end up saving the Oprah Winfrey Network, a tall order even for, say, Oprah Winfrey. And that fancy house O'Donnell bought in Chicago's Wrigleyville neighborhood may be back on the market soon enough. But if "The Rosie Show," her new, nightly talk show taping in Winfrey's former Chicago studio, does not find ratings success, it won't be because O'Donnell allowed anybody to put Baby in a corner. Unbowed by her flameout on "The View," her flailing NBC variety show or the fizzling of her mainstream popularity following the rapid rise of her late-1990s daytime talk show, O'Donnell is again serving TV audiences concentrated doses of Rosie, this time hosting the new-season flagship on Winfrey's troubled, first-year cable venture. And it is, in the vigorously market-researched realm of the American talk show, a breath of funky, refreshing air (at 7 EDT weeknights). With her mixture of self-deprecating wit, take-me-as-I

Oprah Winfrey - Rosie O'donnell Pulling No Punches On New Show

ROSIE O'DONNELL is already causing a stir on U.S. television with her new talk show, which hasn't skirted on dealing with some squeamish and controversial issues. The show made its debut on Oprah Winfrey's network - herself a chat show legend - on October 10th 2011 and has since gone on to address issues such as O'Donnell's own menopausal sex drive and police brutality at the Occupy Wall Street protests. It's caused criticism in some quarters, but O'Donnell is used to it, having made her name when hosting the hugely successful 'Rosie O'Donnell Show' throughout the 1990s and into the beginning of the new millennium. She became a strong advocate of gun control in the wake of the Columbine shootings of 1999. Later, as presenter of 'The View,' her staunch views on the war in Iraq led to her exit from the programme. Speaking about her current show, O'Donnell told the Associated Press "I'm going to talk about things that matter as

Ryan and Tatum O'Neal's Finale: Will They Need a Season 2?

After a summer full of drama and tears, the Oprah Winfrey Network docu-series, "The O'Neals: Ryan and Tatum," came to a conclusion on Sunday night. But actor Ryan O'Neal and his daughter Tatum O'Neal still have plenty of work to do when it comes to repairing their fractured relationship. Will they need a Season 2? The OWN series, which followed the daddy-daughter duo as they tried to reconnect after a 25 year estrangement, was difficult to watch at times. Tatum had issues with her father's relationship with Farrah Fawcett , with Ryan admitting that when he met the iconic beauty, Tatum felt as though he deserted her. (Ryan: "She got left at the curb. But I always said, 'Just stay at the curb. I'll be back!' ") And Ryan's taunting of his daughter on the series ("How's your sobriety going? Because I've got a bottle of tequila upstairs with your name on it!") was indeed wince-worthy. But two can play the blame game, an

Maya Rudolph Firmly Denies Comparisons Between Her 'Up All Night' Character and Oprah Winfrey

5:04 PM PDT 10/26/2011 by THR staff Kevin Winter/Getty Images Maya Rudolph wants to be clear that her Up All Night character, daytime TV talk show host Ava, has nothing to do with Oprah Winfrey . Despite the similarities. In a Chicago Tribune story, writer Christopher Borelli saw a distinct parallel between the character in the NBC comedy also starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett and one of Chicago's most powerful entertainment players. So he contacted Up All Night creator Emily Spivey and Rudolph herself, who also played Oprah on Saturday Night Live . While Spivey denied the comparisons in a calm manner, Rudolph's denials were so adamant that Borelli partially transcribed his interview with the actress to capture the sheer force of her answers. PHOTOS: Oprah Through the Years When Borelli asks, "So you see her existing on the same plane of existence as Oprah, in the same talk show world?" It's all part of the plan to change OWN to "OM." The private Maharishi School specializes in "consciousness-based education" for kindergarten through 12th grade. Oprah Winfrey has refused to donate money to the Martin Luther King Foundation twice, despite crediting the activist for her career. The former talk show queen has long been the most successful and richest black woman for decades, but she has apparently snubbed the memorial more than once. New York Daily News reports that the billionaire had been approached by the project but has repeatedly declined. The MLK memorial allegedly asked for $1million but when Oprah ignored their requests, they returned with the smaller number of $500,000 but she again refused. The accusations may come as a shock to those who remember Oprah saying in 2008 that she owes King for her achievements. "I just wouldn't have the life that I have without Martin Luther King Jr," she said. Should Oprah donate money?

Winfrey expanding Lifeclass'

In an effort to build a bigger audience, the Oprah Winfrey Network announced Tuesday that it would expand its 8 p.m. Oprahs Lifeclass to two hours on Fridays. Oprahs Lifeclass will continue to be what OWN describes as Oprah Winfrey s most personal revelations, new insights and life lessons gleaned from the 25-year history of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Starting this Friday, from 9 to 10 p.m., Winfrey will take live questions from a small audience. The expansion springs from a lesson learned last week when Oprah took questions each night in an online chat. The OWN show averaged 310,000 viewers; the online chat drew 1.6 million streams. Tour heads to UK The NKOTBSB super-group is going overseas. After their U.S. tour this summer, New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys are now booking flights to the UK to play concerts in April. These two boy bands have combined their hit-infested back-catalogues for a show that mixes old tracks with mash-ups and a new song sung by both groups. Jordan Knig

Ashburn Mom Takes Home Oprahs Car

Posted: Wednesday, October 19, 2011 11:30 am | Updated: 11:27 am, Wed Oct 19, 2011. It may have been the Oprah Winfrey Show that inspired Ashburn mom Linda LeFebvre to open her home to whoever needs refuge or a place to stay, but she certainly never expected to receive anything for it. "Her show and the Angel Network taught me about the ability for one person to make an impact, and that it doesn't have to be worldwide, it can be right here in our community," LeFebvre said. Last November, LeFebvre ended up in the audience of Oprah, and among the recipients of Oprah's final favorite things-a list of items that Oprah herself uses. Unbeknownst to LeFebvre, the audience was receiving the largest gift total ever given out by Oprah, including 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. But the Rosie-Oprah brands are wearing thin. An axiom of the TV business is that a single hit can change the fortunes of an entire network. Many cable networks have languished in anonymity until a breakout show lifted them to prominence. Comedy Central didn't break out

WOODBRIDGE -- Manassas resident Angie Watson stopped by the Karen Radley Volkswagen dealership in Woodbridge on Thursday afternoon to pick up her new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. And she didn't pay the dealership any money for her new ride. Watson won the car, priced at $21,665, during a taping of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that she attended last year and that was aired Nov. 17. One of Watson's dreams before her 50th birthday last year was to meet Nelson Mandela and Oprah Winfrey, she said. But she thought she would never see the talk-show star in person after news spread last year about the show ending after 25 years on the air. Unknown to Watson, her friends wrote to the show's producers and told them of Watson's work in the community, which involved giving Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas gifts, and other items to homeless people at Prince William-area shelters. As if fulfilling one of her life's dreams wasn't enough, she had one more surprise she found ou
