Lady Gaga Goes to Harvard With Oprah Winfrey, Launches Born This Way Foundation

Image
What better place than Harvard for Lady Gaga to take the world to school?! The pop superstar, her mother Cynthia and the mother of all talk show hosts, Oprah Winfrey , were at the Ivy League university's Sanders Theatre to officially launch Gaga's Born This Way Foundation. Which, contrary to the singer's reputation as a fervent antibullying advocate, is not an antibullying charity. And no, Oprah, the three pillars of the organization are not "bravery, acceptance and love." Oprah Winfrey was seen brawling with other members of the "Book Club Fight Club" in a comedic segment for Jimmy Kimmel's Oscar special. In another proposed program, "Oprah Repos Her Favorite Things," Winfrey, dressed in sweats and sunglasses, breaks the window of a car and drives off in it, yelling, "I've got a car!" Oprah Winfreys Theia Gown Returns for Oscar Encore

Credit: O Magazine/AP Photo Oprah Winfrey received plenty of comparisons to an Oscar statuette when she wore a gold Theia gown to the Academy Awards. But that isn't the only striking thing about the dress. Oprah must like the fit of the scoop-necked, sequined number because she's worn it twice now. Before she donned it on Sunday night to accept the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, she was photographed in it for the September 2011 issue of "O, The Oprah Magazine." Perhaps she liked the way it looked on the cover so much that she decided to make a second appearance in it. She even kept her hair and accessories similar, aside from the addition of the shining Oscar statuette. It was clearly comfortable enough for a long night. After the show, Oprah joined Jimmy Kimmel for spoofs and interviews on his post-Oscar special. Maybe we'll see it show up soon on her Favorite Things list. February Monday Perhaps my biggest regret last night is leaving the lovely Oscar party I attended hours before Jimmy Kimmel Live aired a sketch that, in 7 minutes, was infinitely more entertaining than all of Billy Crystals Oscars Eulogy. Yes, now that her talk show isnt on the air anymore and the world is left without her mighty Oscar special, Oprah Winfrey has got literal minutes of free time on her satin-lined hands. So much so that she spent an afternoon taking show pitches from the funniest man on late night, Jimmy Kimmel. Shows like Oprah Repos Her Favorite Things and Oprahs Fight Club Book Club. Its the best thing to happen last night. Also all these shows need to actually get made thank you. (via ABC )

Oprah Shows Her Dark Side on 'Jimmy Kimmel' Post-Oscar Show

Image
ABC The excitement of Oscar Sunday continued after Academy Awards host Billy Crystal said goodnight when Jimmy Kimmel welcomed Oprah Winfrey and the band Coldplay for a special post-Oscars show on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Kimmel opened the show with a gag skit where he was waiting outside the back entrance at the Oscars for Crystal to exit, and bribed the host with a briefcase full of cash for an Oscar of his own. As Crystal drove off with his cash, Kimmel was surprised to see Sesame Streets Oscar the Grouch emerge from the bag he expected his statue to be in. Kimmel entered his studio wearing a tuxedo and with two dazzling beauties on each arm, and riffed on the nights big winners in his monologue, joking that The Help was so popular with audiences that Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to get it pregnant, and that although Meryl Streep won the best actress award, he personally thought Viola Davis was robbed by Lindsay Lohan. Although Winfrey, who took home an honorary Oscar on Sunday night, mad

Oprah's Goodbye Asking Seven Figures for 30-Second Spots

Image
Oprah at this past winter's Television Critics Association meeting. The going rate for a 30-second spot in the May 25 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show is a cool $1 million, and if the price holds, it will mark the fourth highest unit cost for a series finale in TV history. Media buyers say the end of Oprahs 25-year run should prove to be an indelible television event, thereby justifying at least some of that hefty price tag. Naturally, clients are betting that the closer will prove to be a ratings blockbuster although the price is not being tied to any sort of traditional ratings guarantee. No ones truly interested in forking over a $145 CPM, which is about how the math works out if you weigh the unit price against Oprahs year-ago average delivery of 7 million viewers per episode. Odds are, however, that the finale will draw at least double that amount in live viewing; time-shifted deliveries could bump the total up to as many as 25 million viewers. In that scenario, the CPM would

5 Ways to Fix Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network

Image
iStock Photo; Scott Olson/Getty Images This story first appeared in the March 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Who would have thought it would come to this: Oprah Winfrey begging for viewers? The former queen of daytime syndication recently sent a tweet to her nearly 9 million followers, begging the ones with Nielsen boxes to watch her channel. The original tweet (since deleted) read thusly: "Every 1 who can please turn to OWN especially if u have a Neilsen [sic] box." She deleted the message, apologized via The New York Times and will have ratings for that night listed with an asterisk that indicates coercion or bias has occurred. But what does the tweet say about Winfrey and OWN after 13 long months trying to launch a new channel? PHOTOS: Oprah Through the Years That this is less a numbers story than the implosion of a cult of personality -- perhaps the biggest and most surprising ego check in recent entertainment history. Maybe that's why, not long after

Tyra Banks Hits Back At Oprah Winfrey Competition Claims

Tyra Banks has hit back at claims that she is in competition with Oprah Winfrey, saying it is "impossible" to rival her amount of success. The America's Next Top Model judge sat down for a question and answer session at Harvard's Business School where she has ditched the limelight to take a course. Addressing the comparisons between her and TV talk show queen Oprah, Tyra said: "The comparisons are extremely flattering, impossible to live up to and inconsistent with my goals." Tyra also explained why she decided to head back to college when she is already incredibly successful. "There's a difference between a career and a business. I'm not looking to build my company based on fans. It's not about being the biggest, but being the best." Speaking about her personality differs from the way she is portrayed on ANTM , Tyra said: "I wish I was hard. I have armour, but a strategic knife can still get in those creases. It's okay to be

Oprah Winfrey Revisits Whitney Houston Interview

February 16, 2012, 12:04 pm By BRIAN STELTER Oprah Winfrey is repackaging her 2009 interview with the pop star Whitney Houston for a Thursday night special on OWN, her ratings-challenged cable channel. The two-hour special, Remembering Whitney: The Oprah Interview, comes five days after Ms. Houston was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. A private funeral will be held on Saturday . OWN is billing the program on its Web site as a no-holds-barred conversation. The interview was originally shown in September 2009 as the season premiere of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and it makes sense that OWN would queue up a repeat of it now, given that several networks and cable channels have scheduled special shows about Ms. Houston. OWN has started to repurpose old episodes of Ms. Winfreys talk show in an attempt to raise her profile on the channel, which is named for her but has suffered from a lack of Oprah programming in its first year. CBS This Morning showed s

Bayport woman wins big

Glenda Sopha attended the Oprah Winfrey Show last year, but the surprises keep coming. Sopha, of Bayport, got more than she bargained for when she attended the show last Novemer. She and her granddaughter got tickets at the last minute and walked away from the show with several thousand dollars' worth of prizes. "I've been such a big fan of Oprah's and my granddaughter had been trying to get us tickets," Sopha said. "She got through and I really think we got the last two seats in the house." Sopha said they received more than $7,000 worth of "this and that," including a Coach purse, iPad, cookware and $1,000 to Nordstrom's. Plus, they each won a car. Sopha was a winner of Oprah's Biggest Giveway, which that day was a 2012 VW Beetle. After nearly a year from winning the prize, Sopha finally picked up her new car last week. "It's getting to be that same excitement again because it's finally coming," Sopha said a few days

Vying to Don Oprahs Mantle

It is only February, but those in the syndicated television industry care only about September. That is when a multitude of new daytime talk shows will come onto the market, the first real test for the genre since Oprah Winfrey signed off nine months ago. There will be Jeff Probst, the Survivor host, whose talk show will be made by CBS, the same company that distributed The Oprah Winfrey Show; Ricki Lake, Steve Harvey and Trisha Goddard; and Katie Couric , whose talk show is, according to industry analysts, the most anticipated of them all. None of the new hosts are making bold claims about reinventing the talk show genre; they merely want to keep it stable. That is not an easy task at a time when the overall broadcast television audience is shrinking. But talk shows are reliable and relatively inexpensive to produce, and thus they remain alluring for local stations in a post-Oprah world. Come September, the new shows will join Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz, the two Oprah protgs w

Whitney Houston funeral: Oprah Winfrey and Mariah Carey blend into the background as an A-List crowd ensure that ...

By Amelia Proud Last updated at 11:53 PM on 18th February 2012 They're two of the biggest stars in the world, but Oprah Winfrey and Mariah Carey made a conscious effort to blend into the congregation at Whitney Houston's 'going home' service. Today was, after all, about one diva, and only diva only... and it was paramount that Whitney Elizabeth 'Nippy' Houston took centre-stage for the last time. So mindful of their superstar statuses and the chaos that follows in their wake, Winfrey and Carey undertook every conceivable measure to retain a low-profile. Famous faces in the congregation: Oprah Winfrey and Mariah Carey blended into the crowd today as Whitney's church community was allowed to take their girl back again The talk show behemoth kept her head down as she entered the church in head-to-toe black, and Carey, a friend of the late star, went for an uncharacteristically muted look.
