Oprah's success hasn't followed her to OWN

"A queen is not afraid to fail," Oprah Winfrey once said. "Failure is another steppingstone to greatness." Now the television queen may have a chance to prove the adage. Her Los Angeles-based Oprah Winfrey Network has been hobbled by missteps, ego clashes, a revolving door in the executive suite and, most important, low ratings. OWN's stumbles suggest, at the least, that even in celebrity-obsessed America, fame alone doesn't guarantee success. PHOTOS: 25 great "Oprah" moments The network was born 15 months ago with high hopes of becoming the television equivalent of Winfrey's O magazine. It paired the star who transformed a daytime talk show into a multibillion-dollar empire with the cable powerhouse Discovery, the parent of Discovery, TLC and Animal Planet . Both parties assumed that the 6 million fans who still watched Oprah's talk show in syndication, which aired its finale in May 2011, would flock to her cable channel. But sustainin

Oprah Revealing Her OWN Future

In Part 3 of our "Extra's" exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, the busy network owner discusses what she has planned for OWN in the coming year. "My thing is I've always thought life is better when you can share it, "Oprah told "Extra's" AJ Calloway, adding, "Information that opens up your heart space and allows you to be the best you can be." This includes a pilot with New Age guru Iyanla Vanzant called "Lovetown USA," in which a whole town falls in love, and Winfrey's "Oprah's Lifeclass: The Tour," which kicked off in St. Louis. Watch the interview! Oprah also talked about President Barack Obama's upcoming presidential campaign and whether she will be helping out. She explained, "When I stepped out four years ago, nobody really knew who he was. I think if he needed me. I would do what was needed, but I don't think that's necessary this time around. Winfrey added, "I love Mr. Obam

Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network On the Rebound

It looks like reports of the OWN Network's imminent demise were greatly exaggerated. The past few weeks have been difficult for Oprah Winfrey 's cable channel, with a round of layoffs, the cancelation of Rosie O'Donnell 's talk show, and a study that suggested the network is losing $149 million per year. However, OWN has received some much-needed good news: In the first quarter of 2012, the network saw a 21 percent increase in total daily viewers. "We are pleased with our start for 2012, viewers are responding and connecting with our programming," said OWN president Erik Logan . Much of the ratings increase is attributed to Winfrey herself. Her Oprah's Next Chapter interview series debuted in January, and it's among the network's highest-rated shows along with Oprah Presents Master Class . Her interview with Whitney Houston 's family members shortly after the singer's death drew 3.5 million viewers, the same number that watched the Mad

According to Oprah Winfrey, the interview "almost didn't happen" because Bobbi Kristina couldn't be found. "I was on the plane leaving New York... the producer says we can't find Bobbi Kristina... and we don't know if she's going to do an interview. And I said, 'By the time I land I'm hoping you would have found her," Winfrey said for the first time Wednesday. As seen on Oprah's Next Chapter, Bobbi Kristina did eventually turn up at the Houston family home in Georgia. But, they stood only because Bobbi Kristina was not open to sitting down with her. Oprah Winfrey to air interview with South Carolina mother who killed her two children on OWN

Oprah Winfrey got the exclusive chance to interview Shaquan Duley, a 30-year-old South Carolina mother who admitted to murdering her two young sons. The interview will air on April 1 as part of the Oprahs Next Chapter series on OWN. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Winfrey talked to Duley at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Detention Center in Orangeburg, SC. Duley has been held in the jail for close to two years without bond and will soon finally learn her sentence this week. The episode will also include interviews with mother Helen and sister Adrian, who both appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in Sept. 2010, just a month after Duley was arrested. Winfrey will also talk for Duleys 7-year-old daughter, Saniya. Entertainment Weekly reports that Duley admitted to murdering her 2-year-old son Devean and 18-month-old son JaVan on Aug. 16, 2010. On that day, she left the house she shared with Helen and Adrian with the children and smothered them at a hotel. She then buckled their bodies in h

But last week's Oprah Winfrey Network shakeup, which included a 20 percent staff layoff, thrusts her into a new dynamic: power-sharing with a top executive from the company that's bankrolled OWN with $300 million-plus. It's a crucial moment for the media queen, who made OWN her next big move after The Oprah Winfrey Show, and for OWN itself: Can Winfrey work as an effective corporate teammate with partner Discovery Communications to turn the struggling channel around? There's another bedrock question: Does a big enough audience exist for the earnest, uplifting fare on Winfrey's OWN, so antithetical to the blowsy charms of Jersey Shore, Keeping Up With the Kardashians and much else that's popular on cable TV? Oprah Winfrey Network sinking fast

Published: March. 25, 2012 at 1:56 PM LOS ANGELES, March 25 (UPI) -- The Oprah Winfrey Network, hemorrhaging money, has laid off 20 percent of its staff and could lose more than $142 million this year, an investment firm said. Research and investment firm SNL Kagan said OWN is teetering on the brink and poised to lose $142.9 million in 2012, Business Insider reported Sunday. The firm said OWN's parent, Discovery Communications, could pull the plug because of weak ratings and advertising losses. Discovery invested $314 million into OWN, The Wall Street Journal reported. OWN was supposed to bring in $220 million by 2015, a media analyst at Morgan Stanley said, but that was projected to be unlikely based on the 685,000 viewers who bailed out from watching during OWN's first week. Even with the addition of Rosie O'Donnell , viewers were underwhelmed and OWN's prime-time viewership dropped from 1 million to 315,000 in four days, Business Insider said.

Oprah Winfrey Held Town Hall Meeting Before OWN Bloodbath Recap

. On Wednesday Oprah Winfrey Held Town Hall Meeting Before OWN Bloodbath was a top story. Here is the recap: (TMZ) Oprah Winfrey ordered a bloodbath at OWN Monday, but she took a highly unusual and humanistic step of calling a town hall meeting after firing 30 people ... to explain why she lowered the boom. Sources who were at the meeting tell TMZ ... Oprah explained that OWN had a duty to the board of directors to justify how much the network was spending, in light of anemic ratings and problems with advertisers. Oprah said the fiscal year for OWN ends on March 31, and she had to get OWN's financial house in order before April 1 -- or else the entire network would be in jeopardy. Oprah said cutting staff was essential in harnessing the cost of running the network. But here's the good news for the 30 people who lost their jobs ... Oprah Winfrey Network to Lose $140 Million Amid Ratings Woes

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) could lose $142.9 million in 2012 amid weak ratings for its programming, SNL Financial , a financial information firm, said Thursday. The Los Angeles , Calif.-based network, headed by media mogul Oprah Winfrey in partnership with Discovery Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: DISCA), saw its ratings go up 10 percent in January to a 0.13. However, this improvement is still "miniscule" compared to the programming investment, stated SNL. Through December of last year, Discovery had invested a whopping $312 million into OWN. The network's ratings for last year, however, were merely even with Discovery Health, the relatively obscure channel OWN had replaced, reported USA Today . Kagan: OWN Losses Could Climb to $142M

By Jon Lafayette -- Broadcasting & Cable, 3/21/2012 7:19:32 PM OWN could saddle Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications with a $142.9 million loss this year, according to a report from SNL Kagan. Kagan analyst Derek Baine says OWN faces a number of problems. They include bad press that could make advertisers impatient and having to renew carriage deals with cable operators in 2012 and 2013 unless ratings move up quickly. "Discovery could end up negotiating carriage agreements for OWN again starting at the end of this year. Its hope for license fees of 20 cents to 25 cents per sub may now be unrealistic." Baine says Discovery management remains bullish and management including Discovery David Zaslav has expressed confidence that having Winfrey in charge full-time at the network would improve the situation. Last week, the network announced the cancellation of Rosie O'Donnell's low-rated show and a restructuring that includes the departure of 30 staffers and the t

Rosie O'Donnell turns 50 today. But the milestone is less merry after Tuesday's final taping of her short-lived talk show on the Oprah Winfrey Network, ending another failed experiment in the channel's tumultuous history and raising new questions about its future. In another troubling sign, 30 of OWN's 150 staffers were laid off Monday, and Discovery Networks (which co-owns OWN with Winfrey) installed new executives to run its business and programming operations. Discovery has invested $310 million in OWN, but first-year ratings were merely even with Discovery Health, the channel it replaced. "I've never seen Discovery invest this much money in such a short period," says longtime cable analyst Derek Baine of SNL Kagan. "The ratings aren't coming in anywhere near as forecast. It would be a huge disappointment for Discovery to have to pull the plug, but it seems like that may be what they're considering at this point, given that they're taki

Oprah Winfrey Network fires one-fifth of staff

PA Images / Paul Beaty/AP Oprah Winfrey 's channel OWN has laid off 30 employees in the wake of poor ratings. The channel launched in January 2011, following the end of Winfrey's 25-year run on her daytime talkshow, The Oprah Winfrey Show . Programming on the new network has garnered disappointing ratings in the months since its launch, despite a brief surge of interest after Houston's exclusive interview with Whitney Houston 's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown . Comedienne and actress Rosie O'Donnell 's chatshow was axed last week, after only five months on the air . Winfrey has now dismissed 30 employees working for the company, and plans to restructure network operations and programming in both Los Angeles and New York City. In a statement on the lay-offs released this week, Winfrey said: "As CEO, I have a responsibility to chart the course for long-term success for the network. To wholly achieve that long-term success, this was a necessary next step."
