David Letterman has described late-night rival Jay Leno as "the most insecure person" he has ever known. Leno was a frequent guest on Letterman's NBC series in the 1980s, but the relationship soured once Johnny Carson left The Tonight Show in the early 1990s. PA Images / John Paul Filo/Landov Both presenters were in the running to replace Carson, with Leno eventually scoring the job and allegedly upsetting Letterman in the process. Letterman spoke about his long rivalry with Leno on Oprah's Next Chapter and explained his mixed feelings about his former friend. "I will say, and I'm happy to say, that I think he is the funniest guy I've ever known," he insisted to Oprah Winfrey. "Just flat out, if you go see him do his nightclub act, just the funniest, the smartest, a wonderful observationist and very appealing as a comic." The Late Show host added: "The fact that he is also maybe the most insecure person I have ever known - I could

David Letterman and Jay Leno have been locked in a highly publicized rivalry for two decades now -- ever since Leno was named Johnny Carson 's Tonight Show replacement over Letterman, who left NBC for CBS as a result of the snub. The battle between the two comedians is so famous that it was the subject of a 1996 HBO film, The Late Shift . But Letterman claims that their fallout is more complicated than some 20-year-old spat over a job. PHOTOS: Best-dressed TV hosts In a new teaser for his sit-down with frenemy Oprah Winfrey -- with whom he had a 16-year feud beginning in 1989 -- Leno's rival opens up about his much-discussed relationship with his fellow comic and former pal.

Booker Releases Emails Related To $100 Million Grant For Newark Schools From Facebooks Zuckerberg

Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg (credit: Anthony Alvarez via Newark Mayors Office) NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) Newark officials have released dozens of internal emails related to a $100 million grant to the citys schools made by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg . According to the correspondence, the social networking site offered the huge grant in the hopes that it would spur contributions from donors. That plan never came to fruition, the e-mails show. The heavily redacted correspondence was sent to The Star-Ledger of Newark late Monday night. That came just days after a state judge ordered Mayor Cory Booker to release the emails following a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of a group representing Newark schoolchildren. It is unfortunate that it took a lawsuit and ruling from the judge to force the City of Newark to turn over public documents, Ed Barocas, legal director for New Jerseys ACLU chapter, said in a statement i

Oprah Winfrey Had Shady Style (PHOTO)

Image
Oprah Winfrey is the prime example of the American dream . Born to a young, single mom, growing up in poverty and experiencing abuse as a young child, Oprah overcame the odds to become one of the most successful women in the world . She got her start on a radio station and soon thereafter went on to host "AM Chicago." Eventually, she helmed " The Oprah Winfrey Show, " one of the most successful TV programs in history. With guests ranging from Michael Jackson to Tom Cruise , and everyone in between, Ms. Winfrey quickly became America's only African-American billionaire . With decades on the air, Oprah had many opportunities to impress (and disappoint) in the style department -- and trust us, there were many cases of both! In this 1986 photograph we see Oprah Winfrey attending the rehearsal for the annual Golden Globe awards. She looks impossibly chi

Hicks: David Letterman to tell Oprah Winfrey about sex scandal

David Letterman will talk to Oprah Winfrey about the sex scandal that rocked his life back in 2009. On "Oprah's Next Chapter," scheduled to air Jan. 6, 2013, the very-private late night talk show host will discuss the extortion plot that caused him to reveal his past affairs with female members of his staff, and how he repaired his marriage with wife Regina Lasko, whom he had married earlier that year, according to E! News. While taping the "Late Show" in October 2009, Letterman told his audience he was the victim of an extortion plot, saying that someone demanded $2 million from him to keep quiet about various sexual liaisons he had with members of his staff. In a short promo clip for the show, Letterman looks uncomfortable as Winfrey asks probing questions, and delves into his battle with depression and his rivalry with Jay Leno (along with his supposed rivalry with her). Can he explain what happened at the Oscars yet? Letterman's appearance comes just a m

Letterman to Discuss Sex Scandal With Winfrey

David Letterman is opening up to Oprah Winfrey on his sex scandal that made headlines in 2009. He also reveals how he repaired his marriage to his wife, Regina Lasko, whom he had just married the year before. A former CBS employee tried to extort $2 million from Letterman in exchange for keeping his affairs quiet. Letterman and Winfrey weren't on good terms for years, but buried the hatchet when Winfrey made an appearance on his "Late Show" in 2005. Winfrey recently sat down with Letterman at his alma mater, Ball State University in Indiana, as part of a lecture series he hosts there. Also Read

Oprah Winfrey on Launching OWN: Lorne Michaels Told Me I'd Use 'Motherf---er' a Lot (Q&A)

Parts of this Q&A first appeared in the Jan. 10, 2013 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Dressed casual cool in a white button-up shirt, black pants and boots, and hair in loose natural curls, Oprah Winfrey is the picture of relaxation on a recent December afternoon on her lush estate near Santa Barbara. Maybe its her now full-time California residency that has her so laid back (or the long-overdue vacation to Maui she has planned for tomorrow) but Winfrey appears the most mellow shes been in over year. And why not? Her almost 2-year-old cable network, OWN, is capping off a second and actually successful year of growth due to the juggernaut appeal of Winfreys exclusive-heavy Next Chapter interviews and widening breadth of clever female-skewing programming aimed at the very viewers who made her an afternoon staple for 25 years.
