Struggling OWN announces six new summer series

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Oprah Winfrey 's struggling OWN network announced on Friday the launch of six new series that will debut during its summer schedule. The push for new programming comes amid a prolonged period of tumult for the fledgling network. OWN has seen a number of high-level personnel shakeups, layoffs and disappointing ratings that included Rosie O'Donnell 's talk show , which was canceled in March, after just five months. (The network is, however, up 14 percent year-to-date in its key demo of women 25-54, and 9 percent in total viewers.) First of the new programming to debut, at 9 p.m. June 4, is "Are You Normal, America?" - a game show in which two contestants compete to determine their normalcy. "Along the way, audiences will be entertained, enlightened and ultimately comforted by the fact that we're all pretty abnormal -- but that's what makes life fun!" is how the network describes it. Next to premiere will be "Lives

Oprah to wed on TV to boost viewership

Los Angeles - Oprah Winfrey (58) is planning to televise her wedding to long-time boyfriend Stedman Graham (61) to boost the viewership of her TV channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). The National Enquirer tabloid quoted unnamed insiders saying Winfrey is "pulling a Kardashian" a reference to the made-for-television wedding spectacle in which reality star Kim Kardashian tied the knot with Kris Humphries last year for a marriage which lasted only 72 days. The events leading up to the $100m wedding, including Graham's bachelor party, would allegedly be chronicled on OWN to try and lure more viewers to the channel. According to a friend of Graham, Winfrey offered her boyfriend of 26 years a prenuptual agreement of millions of dollars as well. Viewers want to see her While the shows that Winfrey appears in herself are doing well with regards to viewership, like her talk show Oprah's Next Chapter, the rest of OWN's channel line-up is not making a dent in the ratin

Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton are persuasive people but why?

Image
Former President Bill Clinton is an example of someone who is considered very persuasive. ( Daniel Berehulak, Getty Images / September 20 , 2011 ) Why do some people reach greater heights than others? Often, they simply have the persuasive stuff. Oprah Winfrey : She may not be an expert in healthful eating or relationships or novels, but millions of people follow her advice anyway. "She's positioned herself as a friend and an advisor," says British persuasion expert Steve Martin . "But she can also say: 'I'm one of you.' That's important." Steve Jobs : The late co-founder of Apple was a master at building buzz. The initial scarcity of new products like iPhones and iPads only boosted their appeal, Martin says. And those long lines in front of the Apple stores were like potent advertisements in their own right. The message was clear: If so many people were so desperate for the new gadget, it must be worth having. Bill Clinton : "He would

Oprah Winfrey absent from Time's 100 Most Influential list

Image
Oprah Winfrey has been a constant on Time magazine's annual list of the most influential people in the world, from the inaugural list in 1999 to each subsequent list since it became an annual event in 2004. But the Mighty O's perfect record has come to a crashing halt. For the first time, Winfrey isn't on the list . To give some perspective, Winfrey, listed nine times, has been on the list more times than Barack Obama (seven times), Hillary Rodham Clinton (seven times), Steve Jobs (five times), Bill Clinton (four times) and the Dalai Lama (three times). So what happened? Three letters: OWN. In 2011, Winfrey's juggernaut of a daily talk show was still being syndicated to massive ratings. One year later, the only way to find Winfrey is to seek her out on her cable channel in the vertigo-inducing high numbers of the cable lineup. Recent ratings successes aside (she drew channel-record high numbers with her interview with Whitney Houston's teenage daughter), the channel
